This 24 mile high level circumnavigation of Thirlmere Reservoir features about 6500ft of ascent and we're sure it will soon become another classic event.
It is hugely varied, with steep rocky climbs, moorland, bogs, lakeside singletrack and some of the best mountain trails in the Lakes. The two halves couldn't be much more different but be aware - this route is no picnic. The word of the day during it's first running was 'brutal'
From the start in Grasmere you'll soon be clambering over the rocky outcrop that makes up the iconic summit of Helm Crag. Continuing across the undulating ridgeline that incorporates Gibson Knott and
Calf Crag you'll then make an ascent to Greenup Edge. From there the route features an energy sapping traverse across the boggy moorland to summit Ullscarf and High Tove.
The course quickly descends to pick up the beautiful shoreline trail and loops around the far edge of Thirlmere via the dam. The long, steep ascent up Sticks Pass follows with the summits
of Raise and Lower Man waiting before onwards to the high point of the event (and the 3rd highest summit in England), Helvellyn.
From here the route skirts both Nethermost Pike and Dollywaggon Pike on a brilliant high level mountain trail before descending to loop round Grisedale Tarn and back to Grasmere via the
scenic Little Tongue.
With 6500ft of vertical elevation squeezed into it’s 24 miles this is not for the faint hearted. But if you undertake the challenge you'll be rewarded with ascents of some of the finest fells in the
Lakes, incredible views, proper mountain trails, flowing footpaths, lots of bogs… and a bloody good meal afterwards!
